Sci-fi in Amsterdam

Inspired by the theme of the Blender Institute's new open movie project, and back from a recent trip to Amsterdam, I thought I'd take a shot at envisioning the city's distant future. Whenever I'm trying to conceive of imagined urban landscapes, I'm always reminded of the novel Invisible Cities by Italian surrealist Italo Calvino. To quote:

"With cities, it is as with dreams: everything imaginable can be dreamed ... Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else."

As cities pressed for space tend to built vertically, I imagined central Amsterdam's concentric rings of canals rising hundreds of feet into the air in tiers, featuring vast parks on the outer rings and crowded urban centers within. Visible in the background are massive raised tracks and tubes which feed into the main train station. An edge render below shows how cantilevered housing extends from the edges of the tiered city, mirroring the way houseboats dock in canals at the lowest level.

The city was modeled in Blender with details (mainly lighting) painted on in post.
